This season’s EFL Cup and Premier League winners – Manchester City – will be hoping to land a famous treble this Saturday as the take on Chelsea in the Champions League Final.
This competition has been the one that’s eluded City since their dominance in English football in recent times and to most of their fans it will be more important than the League title they won back this term.
It certainly won’t be easy though as they face another English side – Chelsea – in the final, who having lost in the FA Cup Final earlier this month, will be wanting to end their season on the ultimate high.
It will be the third all-English final in this competition since the 2007-08 season and even though City will be the clear favourites to win, it’s Chelsea that have the better pedigree in this competition with a win in 2012 and a runners-up finish in 2008.
In contrast, City will be playing in their first ever Champions League, or European Cup final.
Of course, being an all-English affair that will give the stat lovers a lot to go on with the sides having played this season already. They’ve met twice in the league, but also in the FA Cup this term, so we’ve three bits of current form to look at.
The league clashes this season ended in a win a-piece, but with an FA Cup semi-final victory over City, it’s the London club that have the slight upper hand this campaign.
The outright betting odds see Man City on offer at 1.44, with Chelsea 2.75.
While the 90mins market has Man City at 1.85, the draw 3.50 and Chelsea 4.33.
The last time the sides met in any European competition was back in 1971 (Cup Winners Cup) and Chelsea won both those games in a two-legged affair 1-0.
In more recent times, the head-to-head stats suggest we might get plenty of goals here. The last 5 league head-to-heads have all gone OVER 2.5 GOALS, with both teams also scoring in the last 4 league clashes.
You can back 3+ goals in the game (Over 2.5) at 2.20, with Both Teams To Score on offer at 2.00.
With only one DRAW in the last 16 head-to-heads, then these teams don’t often play out stalemates, you can back either a Chelsea or Man City win (90min) in the ‘double chance’ market at 1.28.
Looking at the scoring markets, City’s Kevin De Bruyne has a good record when facing one of his former clubs – yes, he made 3 appearances for the Blues back in 2012-14. Maybe, it’s because he’s got a point to prove for Chelsea sending him out on loan and then selling him – surely a decision the Londoners massively regret now!
Chelsea’s Timo Werner, who has 12 goals in all competitions this season, has been in decent form in recent weeks and is sure to be popular in the scoring markets, while with goals in the last two head-to-heads their Hakim Ziyech is another player to have on your radar.
Overall, it’s a game with a lot at stake – this is after all the best prize in European Cup football to win. City will be keen to put the hoodoo of being one of the best clubs around to yet lift this cup, while Chelsea fans and players will gain confidence by holding a 2-1 head-to-head record over the Premier League Champions this season.
But, with both sides having plenty of firepower then the ‘BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE’ option at 2.00 actually looks decent value and is a bet that should give you a cracking run for your money.
